Response to RM SOSP 9.3

Respond positively, specifically and substantially with a minimum of 200 words. No paraphrasing. Something that I see first hand as being a problem for families in my community is not being able to afford food and or school lunches. Outside the home there are ways to help feed a family, WIC, food stamps, etc. It is crazy to me that if a family cannot afford to put money into their child’s lunch account that they go negative in the hole. The child then receives a peanut butter and jelly sandwich everyday for lunch until it is paid. I think this […]

Class discussion need finished in 4 hours 2 paragraphs

This and last week’s material reviewed major theoretical orientations that we will refer to often throughout the semester. I’ve previously suggested downloading and printing the theoretical orientation handout (provided in Week 1 and 2 handouts) because it is a useful tool that you can use to note not only theoretical assumptions but stages of human development. We will also come across other theories that can be placed into each of the major orientations presented this week as they are smaller theories deriving from these broader theories. For each stage of development, you can enter key-words, phrases, and names of smaller […]

How does social structure influence the choices and experiences of aging individuals

A sociological perspective on aging highlights the role that social structure plays in shaping the choices and experiences of aging individuals. That is, sociologists recognize that while we are acting, feeling, reasoning beings that attach meaning to our behaviour, there are also important structural forces that influence our choices and experiences. For example, an individual’s choice to dye their greying hair may be influenced by the powerful forces of the media and cultural expectations of aging. Similarly, an older person’s choice to participate in community events may depend on their access to economic resources and transportation. Taking a sociological perspective, […]

Race and Ethnicity

With nearly seven billion people on the planet, the world offers a fascinating array of human characteristics. Race refers to the inherited physical characteristics that distinguish one group from another. These distinguishing characteristics include a variety of complexions, colors, and shapes. Although there have been significant strides in the understanding of race and racial equality, two myths of race are still common. One is the perception that some races are superior to others; the other is that “pure” races exist. The idea of race remains a very real and powerful force throughout the world, shaping basic relationships between people in […]

Deviance & Conformity

Our first Module was governed by the Structural-functional view which ultimately looks at what keeps society together (solidarity) and what are shared values, norms, beliefs and practices (Culture). While most people go successfully through the process of socialization (society’s way of making us all fit into our cultures), society fails with its socialization process with some people, who will deviate from its norms. Perhaps the most interesting theory related to Deviance, Conformity and Social Control comes from the great sociologist Emile Durkheim (again functionalism!). He argues that, like everything else, even Deviance has a function in society! He also argues […]
